Up Close 2nd Edition with Andrew S. Gibson (Podcast 777)

Today I share a conversation with Andrew S. Gibson. who I spoke with for the first time exactly 10 years ago, and then again 8 years ago, as he released a few of his early eBooks alongside mine when we both wrote for Craft & Vision. A lot has changed since then, but Andrew is pretty much the same, so it was nice to talk again. I messed up, recording the first 20 minutes or so of this conversation with my webcam microphone, following a discussion with my accountant, and like a fool, I forgot to switch back to my Podcasting mic. You’ll hear the difference as I switch back, but I hope it doesn’t spoil it too much for you. I’ve also shared some photos that Andrew kindly shared with us to illustrate our conversation.

Andrew S. Gibson is the founder of The Creative Photographer and Mastering Lightroom websites, the editor and publisher of Creative Photographer Magazine and author of more than 40 photography ebooks. He lives in south-west England with his family and likes making portraits and black and white photos.

Craft & Vision PHOTOGRAPH No.9 Now Available!

Craft & Vision PHOTOGRAPH No.9 Now Available!

The Craft & Vision Magazine PHOTOGRAPH No.9 has just been released!

Elegant and simple. Black and white. Delineation of space and shape. Like the refined effortlessness of a great image, Issue 9 of PHOTOGRAPH magazine is newly redesigned!

To be totally honest, when I first viewed this issue on my computer, I didn’t get it. Especially as a contributing author, I was not impressed by the fact that most of my images were now being scrunched into a portrait orientation page. But then I noticed the link to David duChemin’s Viewing Notes. If you follow these instructions, the new layout is beautiful, adaptive and powerful, and does make for much better viewing on the iPad and also now the iPhone 6 Plus. You can simply flip the device over on it’s side to view the wide format pages. Quite the viewing experience!

To kick off the new layout, this issue is dedicated to the line, light and shadow of non-colour. Within the 230 pages are portfolios and interviews with these incredible photographers: Jason Bradley, who discusses his extraordinary underwater work and the limitations, challenges, and thrills of it all; Carla Coulson, whose Paris fashion portraiture was borne from leaving her job, moving to France and becoming a published photographer within one year; the architectural style of Julia Anna Gospodarou, who explains how she sees sensual lines in concrete and steel structures; and the beauty of Chicago nights as illuminated by Satoki Nagata, who went from scientist to photographer with striking results.

Each of the regular contributors, John Paul Caponigro, Bruce Percy, Guy Tal, Chris Orwig, Martin Bailey (that’s me!), Piet Van den Eynde, Adam Blasberg, and David duChemin, have dedicated their articles to the art of black and white photography. In search of the emotional portrait? Sherri Koop’s Featured Article may lead you to where you want to be.

Not only redesigned, but this issue also kicks off the now bi-monthly publication. The goal is to provide you with beautiful portfolios and the best value in photographic education. And despite the changes, this big, beautiful, digital magazine remains ad-free.

Click here to head over to Craft & Vision to get your copy for just $6.40 for a limited time. If you miss that it’s still only $8, and you can’t get this much photography goodness for $8 anywhere else!

A Beautiful Anarchy with David duChemin (Podcast 424)

A Beautiful Anarchy with David duChemin (Podcast 424)

Every so often, someone writes a book that changes everything. A book so profound that everyone with a desire to live not only a creative life, but a richer, fuller life, will read. Well, my friend David duChemin has just done that, again. His earlier best-selling books changed things to a degree. David has given photographers and artists a vocabulary that I feel was missing in modern photography.

Now he’s given us permission and the courage to live the creative life that many long to live, and I even believe he gives us a means to identify what that life might be to you. Join me today for a conversion with David duChemin that is almost as inspiring as his new book, A Beautiful Anarchy – When The Life Creative Becomes The Life Created.

I read preview copy of A Beautiful Anarchy last week, and I knew in the first few pages that David has done it again. Photography and Creativity literature has just been changed, once again, in a profound and beautiful way.

Listen to the conversation with the audio player above, in iTunes or your iPhone etc. and when you’re ready, click the links below to pick up your copy. You can get either the paperback with a PDF file for just $30, or go just for the PDF file at only $10.

Nightscape with David Kingham (Podcast 422)

Nightscape with David Kingham (Podcast 422)

Today I talk with David Kingham, the author of Craft and Vision’s latest ebook Nightscape, that is hot of the digital press. David is a landscape photographer currently living a nomadic life traveling the America West specializing in making breathtaking photographs of the night sky.

Use this audio player to listen:

Here are the questions I posed to David. Please listen to see how he answered them. 🙂

  • How you got started in photography?
  • How did your photography progress into night photography?
  • You wrote a wonderful blog post about how you completely changed your life, which I’ll link to in the show-notes, but could you give us a brief outline?
  • I really liked how you start with 22 pages of information on Understanding the Night Sky. How did you accumulate all this knowledge of your subject?
  • You are also providing a series of presets with the book. Can you tell us how they tie into the book?
  • You feature a number of stitched panorama photos and go on to discuss some of your techniques. What’s your most used technique for shooting the images to stitch together?
  • I was surprised to see you recommend the use of fog filters to blur the night sky, although I now understand why having read your explanation. Could you explain this here for the listeners?
  • The 500 Rule was also very helpful. I was happy to find that the settings I have used on the few occasions that I have done night sky photography were pretty much accurate, but I feel happier now that I have a proven formula to work with. Can you explain the 500 Rule?
  • When I heard you were living out of a Toyota 4Runner and a tent, I realized just how hard you were working for your craft. How long have you been living the nomadic life now, and how long do you think you’ll be able to keep it up?
  • What do you do for power?
  • I know we’ve already covered a number of techniques, and I don’t want to give away too much, but could you give us your three top tips for others wanting to photograph Nightscapes?

Also, I’m a little embarrassed to show these alongside David’s beautiful night sky images, but here are the photo from a time-lapse I was making, that I mentioned during our conversation where what would appear to be a meteor made the night sky as bright as day.

A Meteor Made it as Bright as Day!

And here is the frame before the above photograph. You can just see a meteor on the horizon. I’m not sure if this could be the cause, especially as it was the previous frame, but it shows that there was some activity.
