Adventure of a Lifetime
For me Iceland was an adventure of a lifetime, I think its one place on every landscape photographers list of places to go. We all see the images on the net from professionals who have been here and how diverse the place is, so to actually get there was something else. I wanted to do a tour so I didn’t have to worry about all the research, getting around, how long it would take to get to each place etc so I found Martins tours and locked it in. I couldn’t have asked for a better tour guide (and fellow guide Tim Vollmer), everything was organized just beautifully down to the smaller details that count after the end of a long day like great food, comfy rooms and amenities and beer….. I’m already looking through my images wishing I was back there. Thanks again Martin for all your guidance and knowledge and recommend anyone sitting on the fence about getting over there to just DO IT…
This tour ranks among our very best!
Martin Bailey’s Winter Wonderland Photography Tour was an outstanding experience. We have participated in a significant number of photo tours and this one ranks among our very best. We returned with an amazing number and variety of quality images. Martin worked very hard to put us in the right place at the right time to get everything possible from the trip. An added dimension was the quality of the instruction and his concern with everyone getting the benefit of his experience with suggestions for camera settings and compositions. The food, accommodations and cultural experiences exceeded what we expected.
Great Tour from the first until the last moment!
Great Tour from the first until the last moment. A great group with a high understanding of photography, and great organization. Martin gave us great teaching in Manual Mode, Lightroom and Color Management etc. Even the experienced Photographer can learn something.
What an amazing trip!
What an amazing trip. Beautiful scenery, wonderful traveling companions, and Martin’s expertise there for the asking. We all came away with images that would have been impossible to get without the experience and thought that went into planning this tour. I can’t recommend it highly enough.
Took My Art to Another Level
My trip with the group to Morocco was wonderful. Firstly the professionalism of the tour guide, the driver, and Martin was impeccable. The hotels were charming, the food was well prepared and plentiful. I made some good friends and talked shop with other like-minded photographers Most importantly though, I believe I took the best photos that I ever have on this trip. The combination of amazing places, colorful people and Martin’s willingness to help with my photography really took my art to another level and my love of photography has grown ever deeper. I highly recommend this trip to any serious photographer with a thirst for adventure.
You made us feel more like family than clients
Liz and I wanted to once again say thanks for a terrific tour with the snow monkeys and the wildlife of Hokkaido. We enjoyed all aspects of our time with our special group (the very early mornings somewhat less) and especially your instruction and mentoring all along the way. The tour conductor’s constant oversight ensured an effortless trip for us and made us feel more like family than clients. As a business owner, I know how much work and effort goes into setting up the logistics for a trip such as this, as well as the effort required to make the field work come together seamlessly. I commend you for your tireless efforts throughout our journey in Japan.
Everything ran so smoothly even when things weren’t going to plan!
Your organisation and contact before the tour was unlike any other and very impressive, and continued throughout the tour. Everything ran so smoothly (even when things weren’t going to plan!) The variety in wildlife and landscape was also brilliant and having the chance to go back to the same places over a couple of days and in different conditions really gave me the chance to improve on my skills. Your workshops were also really helpful and I have definitely noticed an improvement in my images over the two weeks – some of the images I’ve taken are unlike anything I thought I was capable of before the trip!
Worry Free Travel Experience
One of the biggest advantages of a photo workshop is a worry-free travel experience. Martin’s Iceland workshop was just that. A participant just needs to get themselves to the Reykjavik airport and Martin takes care of everything else. The workshop features a wide variety of shooting locations sure to please any landscape photographer. A great added bonus was the food on the tour which featured some delectable dinners.
Martin maximises photographic opportunities for participants
I have taken photography workshops in Australia, France, USA, the Falkland Islands, the Subantarctic and Japan and Martin Bailey is the best tour leader I have encountered. The organisation of his tour was second to none and Martin makes sure that he maximises the photographic opportunities available to his tour participants.
Not only did we visit the best photographic locations, I also learned new camera and post-processing techniques resulting in images which have won in photography competitions and been included in the Photographic Society of America’s PID Interclub Best of the Best for 2016. I would highly recommend Martin as a tour leader.
Highly Recommended!
We had a fascinating trip to Morocco, plenty of colour and plenty of contrasts with assistance and ideas available from Martin on request. Highly recommended.
Martin’s organization was meticulous and his Japanese language skills were key!
I highly recommend Martin Bailey’s Hokkaido tour, in particular, because Martin is not only a responsible, knowledgeable, forthcoming and nice guy, but also a superb photographer himself, who knows all the right places.
Martin’s organization was meticulous and his Japanese language skills were key, from getting us from Tokyo to Hokkaido (and back) as well as to the different photo shoots and hotels (via bus), everything went smoothly and without a hitch. The hotels were very nice and the food plentiful and good to excellent.
Martin answers questions regarding choice and use of equipment, photography in general, and provides advice on the challenges of photographing the different locations etc. At the moment I can’t think of anything else – besides the 2010 tour and the challenge of selecting my favorites from 2009. 🙂
The teacher we know from the podcasts is even better in person!
My time at your snow monkey workshop in Jigokudani was so much fun! Thank you for all you taught me – exposure, composition, color management, Lightroom processing, workflow and more. The teacher we know from the podcasts is even better in person!
Namibia is an Austerely Beautiful Country
I participated in the 2017 version of this tour and have to say it was magnificent. Wonderful landscapes, fabulous wildlife, and a great group of photographers from around the world. Martin is an exceptional leader/teacher and our local guides were thrilled to share their knowledge and love for their country.Namibia is an austerely beautiful country that has not yet been discovered by the tourist industry. Go now before they find out and ruin it.
Your commitment to helping your clients is without equal!
Truly, Martin, I have been participating in workshops for many years with some of the world’s best, but your commitment to helping your clients realize their full potential as artists — in preparation, image capture, and post-capture interpretation — is without equal.
Beyond My Expectations
I participated in the 2018 Namibia tour with Martin Bailey and it was beyond my expectations in many respects. Namibia is an extremely photogenic country that is only just being discovered and the tour covered landscape, portrait, cultural and wildlife photography. We arrived at the locations at the right time of day and both Martin and Richard always had time for coaching on all aspects of photography so that we could get the best shot. The two guides Jeremia and Forster were exceptional in their knowledge of all facets of Namibia and ensured that everything ran smoothly and safely. The lodgings were excellent and the food delicious. Lastly, the group of photographers on this tour was fun to be with and we all learned from each other. This was my second tour with Martin and it won’t be the last.
A delightfully rich, rewarding and enjoyable experience!
Martin’s Hokkaido Tour and Workshop was a delightfully rich, rewarding and enjoyable experience both photographically and culturally. Martin’s fluency in Japanese, in-depth knowledge of the locations, friendly nature and extensive photographic knowledge and skills (which he willingly shared) make him a great guide, teacher and companion. Thanks to Martin’s expert assistance and advice together with spectacular locations and vantage points, I came home with some of the best photos I’ve ever taken. And I’m now shooting confidently in manual – which, I discovered, is important with wildlife than can move rapidly!
Martin organizes and runs a great tour!
Martin organizes and runs a great tour. I attended the 2016 Winter Wildlife Tour. I love going on tours that offer the chance to photograph a variety of subjects. This tour provided non-stop photo opportunities. The highlight for me was watching and photographing the White-Tailed and Steller Sea Eagles. Martin also exposes his guests to Japanese culture which was a great experience.
Delighted with My Photos!
I have started to go through all my pictures and have been really delighted with the results. As the tour name states, it really was the Complete Namibia Tour. The Himba really were a highlight. It was an excellent tour with a great group of people. Thoroughly enjoyed! Thanks for all your help!
Martin is an excellent teacher. Very patient, and with a wonderful sense of humour!
Martin is an excellent teacher. Very patient, and with a wonderful sense of humour. He knows Japan, particularly Hokkaido, because he’s lived here for over 26 years, and has chosen excellent locations, none of which disappointed – no small feat considering how reliant on weather we were. He’s well-organized and if anything didn’t go according to plan I certainly didn’t notice a glitch in the matrix. But for a guy who’s so easy-going he can really march his troops, and we were up at some lunatic hours, one morning my alarm went as early as 4:00am. Thank God you can get coffee in the vending machines. If you’re looking for a relaxing holiday, this isn’t it, though the food, sake, and abundant hot springs took the sting out of the early mornings and long hours.
I’ll go anywhere with you Martin!
The helpful tour operator, Yukiko, is definitely the best guide one can have on this planet “fullstop”. I am very happy to meet Martin in person, who gave me back my motivation about photography, even with being on the field again. Taking great shots of White-tailed eagles , Steller’s Sea Eagels and Blakiston’s Fish owl is good enough for making this trip a very successful one, however all the workshops and Martin’s on the field instructions about photography in general, made this trip an unbeatable one , I’ll go anywhere with you Martin. After 8 years of photographing wildlife, I just started to shoot “manual” and started to get wonderful results thanks to Martin’s excellent lectures and tips. CU again Martin!
Unbelievable photographic opportunities, outstanding food and superb company!
Unbelievable photographic opportunities, outstanding food and superb company made for a truly memorable experience. I shot some of my best images ever! Thank you Martin!
An Exceptional Photo Journey
MBP Japan Wildlife Tour was truly an exceptional experience. From the country & culture to the camaraderie of the cohort, this trip was the best. Martin provided the most organized & varied photo opportunities – Not to be missed!
Martin’s passion for photography is infectious!
Martin’s passion for photography is infectious. Whether you’re standing in the dark, at minus 15 degrees, wearing nearly every item of clothing you brought, waiting for a sunrise, or sitting on the floor in traditional Japanese attire over dinner (with beer), you are inspired by his enthusiasm, knowledge, and desire to help you master your craft. This trip was a magical blend of opportunity and expertise. If you’re looking for a unique insight into the photographic opportunities of Japan wildlife and landscape, this is the perfect trip! Martin’s trips will book quickly as word spreads – don’t miss out.
Martin knows this part of the world very well!
In Jan 2017 I had the opportunity to travel with Martin and a group of talented and passionate photographers on the Hokkaido Winter Photography Adventure. It was a great experience over 12 days of intense immersion in photography.
Martin knows this part of the world very well. What becomes obvious immediately is Martin’s love for the island and for making images here. The adventure is well planned with a clearly crafted itinerary.
Martin’s logistics team is also superb – getting to locations at the right time, the rest stops, the meal breaks and the hotels – all show very careful planning. The team are masters at making sure everything is as it should be – from special meals request to individual personal needs. An excellent experience and definitely recommended!
Martin runs an excellent operation!
In January 2017 I joined Martin’s Hokkaido Winter Landscape Photography Adventure for the second time, and it was at least as enjoyable as the first. Martin runs an excellent operation with the best hotels and oodles of individual space on the bus, from which all activities take place. The bus itself is expertly driven along narrow lanes packed with snow by one of the finest and safest drivers on type. And a charming and efficient tour administrator takes care of everything else. All this enables Martin to concentrate on looking after our photography; he does this with great enthusiasm and with concern for individual needs. As for the photography, this is a terrific experience and should not to be missed by any landscape photographer!
Will I return for a third visit? Quite probably, yes! But if you have yet to experience this Adventure, I strongly recommend you do so soon … don’t delay, book your place on next year’s Adventure today!
Martin was always available to answer photographic and cultural questions
I have been on many photographic tours and workshops in recent years and would rank MBP Snow Monkeys and Hokkaido Tour and Workshop as one of the very best. The trip organization was excellent with very good pre-trip information and help throughout the trip. Martin knows exactly where to be and when to be there to get the best shots. He was always available to answer photographic as well as cultural questions.
I think photographers of all levels would benefit from this tour/workshop. I particularly enjoyed the introduction to Japanese culture and cuisine, a wonderful bonus to an exceptional photographic experience. In comparing trips to photograph Japanese wildlife in winter I also found the Martin Bailey trip to be an excellent value for what was provided.
A cornucopia of great photography locations, people, learning and fellowship!
The Martin Bailey Hokkaido experience is a cornucopia of great photography locations, people, learning, and fellowship. It was as much a cultural experience as it was a photographic one. Martin’s command of the language and familiarity with the locations ensured a hassle-free trip. It was an amazing experience to be surrounded by encouraging colleagues in a non-competitive environment with unrestricted access to such a competent and approachable teacher.
2011 Update: This was my third time on the tour and definitely not my last. That should speak bundles.
Beyond what I had experienced on other tours!
I knew from day one that Martin’s tour was way beyond what I had experienced on other tours. I’ve struggled to single out why and concluded that it was Martin’s wonderfully collaborative approach and enthusiasm for each of the locations we photographed. He shared his vision freely, and at the same time encouraged each participant to develop their personal vision. He (and his co-leader Rich) worked with us on specific techniques to accomplish our perfect images, and I came away with a body of work that I am truly proud of.
Namibia is a beautiful country, with grand landscapes that are not always easy to capture. With coaching and support from Martin, Rich and other participants my ability to translate what I was seeing into an artful image developed daily.
As an aside, the accommodations were beautiful and fun… and be sure to diet before you join the tour as there is never a time when delicious and rich food is not tempting you!
I really enjoyed the Hokkaido Landscape Photography Adventure tour!
I really enjoyed the Hokkaido Landscape Photography Adventure tour. Not only did I make many nice images, I also appreciated very much the opportunity to get to know Martin and the other nice participants with whom I spent the 12 incredible days. I came back with photos I could not easily get anywhere else and am very happy with them. I hope I can join another trip that Martin leads in the near future.
The whole experience was wonderful!
The 2017 tour was my second Hokkaido landscape outing with Martin. As before the whole experience was wonderful: the scenery was stunning, both the accommodation and food were perfect and the bus gave me ample space to store my gear together my surreptitious purchases from the convenience stores along the way (the custard buns are a particular treat).
Martin’s team knew what we wanted without being asked, and Martin’s knowledge of Hokkaido and the locations he chose gave me some superb photographic opportunities. The group were an interesting mix of backgrounds yet jelled perfectly, probably due to Martin’s ever-present enthusiasm for photography and Japan. I’m already planning a third trip in 2019!
The tour exceeded all expectations!
The Snow Monkey and Hokkaido Photography Tour exceeded all expectations. Martin is very generous with his photographic knowledge and technical assistance – but never obtrusive. I was already shooting in manual mode, but returned home with far greater camera skills and the ability to manually control the shots that I wanted. For the first time I had images of a high enough quality to enter in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition. The tour was also excellent culturally with many memorable traditional Japanese meals….and baths!
Martin’s passion and enthusiasm for running the trip was clear!
Many thanks for organising and running such a good trip – I have now been on many wildlife photographic trips, and this rates as one of the very best. Martin’s passion for the subject and clear enthusiasm for running the trip was clear to everyone. And Martin’s technical knowledge of photography is second to none. Many, many thanks.
Highly recommended!!!
Attending MBP Workshop 2011 was a unique experience and great introduction to Japanese culture and wildlife. The workshop was well organised and gives the photographer great freedom. Highly recommended!!!
I recommend this tour to any serious photographer with a sense of adventure.
I traveled on the January 2017 Hokkaido Winter Photography Adventure with a group of very talented photographers from all over the world. Martin knows Hokkaido very well and his passion for the area as well as for photography was reflected in all of our locations and experiences. The itinerary had us at carefully selected locations at the right time of day and time was given to really explore these spots. The photo opportunities were varied and endless.
The logistics of this tour were carefully planned and executed flawlessly. The team anticipated our needs and both the food and accommodation were top notch. A bonus was ample room on the bus to store equipment and winter clothing. I recommend this tour to any serious photographer with a sense of adventure.
The hotels were very good and it was great experiencing a bit of Japanese culture!
Excellent tour which I would recommend for anyone interested in improving their photographic skills and the opportunity to see some wonderful wildlife. A real privilege. The flexibility of the tour enabled us to see cranes performing beautiful dancing whilst it was snowing which I shall never forget. Being at the various locations for a few days was great as not only did it give the opportunity to improve on taking photos but gave a small appreciation and understanding of the animal’s behaviour and hence look out for more specific shots to take. The tour was well organised, ran smoothly to Martin and the Tour Operator’s credit. The hotels were very good and it was great experiencing a bit of Japanese culture and food again. Thanks for a memorable tour.
Great Learning Opportunities
Our tour of Iceland with Martin Bailey led us to wonderful locations that provided an opportunity see and photograph incredible sites. Martin and Tim Volmer provided great learning opportunities and improved my landscape photography. They were available to talk about photography at any time and we shared our experiences with everyone in the group and learned from each other. Great tour and wonderful camaraderie among our whole group. Highly recommended!
Highly Recommended
I just completed Martin’s first tour to Iceland and it was the trip of a lifetime. We saw some stunning locations that you will not find anywhere else in the world. The tour was well planned and well paced. As a vegetarian, prior to attending, I was concerned about what I would eat. I need not have worried, as the food was amazing and I was well accommodated.
Many thanks to Martin and Tim. Highly recommended.
Just a few lines cannot do justice
Writing a few lines about the “Complete Namibia Tour & Workshop” of May/June 2022, I cannot do justice to the incredible experience it has been for me. It nearly did not happen due to COVID, and I feel fortunate to have been a part of it. Your choice of itinerary took us across the whole of Namibia, and we photographed many incredible places I possibly never would have visited on my own. I look forward to working through all the photos I have brought home, and it is already clear that my camera skills have improved with your guidance. Congratulations on a flawless tour with outstanding accommodation. Your organization and logistical execution could not have been better. I am looking forward to being part of your future trips.
A memorable and rewarding experience!
I participated in the MBP Tour and Workshop in Nagano and Hokkaido in Feb 2011. I had little Wildlife photography experience prior to the Tour. However, my understanding and appreciation of this facet has grown considerably because of my participation. The itinerary, the organisation, the photography mentoring, the wildlife, the scenery, the accommodation, the food, the cameraderie within the group, all added to the fun of involvement. Martin’s friendliness, approachability, knowledge of photography and Japan and the language, ensured a memorable and rewarding experience, that I would recommend to anyone interested.
Namibia is Extremely Photogenic
I have been on enough photo’ tours with Martin to know that the organisation, accommodation, and photography will be amongst the best available. But this was to be my first visit to the African Continent since I had lived and worked in Kenya several decades ago and so I had other concerns, albeit slight, about such things as security and the quality of food and drinking water. These, however, were put to rest almost as soon as my flight had landed … the experience of arriving for the first time at an international airport can, at best, be intimidating. But not so at Windhoek; there was almost a party atmosphere in the small arrivals hall with a crowd of cheerful, welcoming faces. And the whole experience just got better and better from that encouraging start.
Namibia is extremely photogenic regardless of your interest, be it landscape, portrait or wildlife, and we saw it all. Our two guides, Jimmy and Forster, proved to be knowledgeable, friendly and extremely safe drivers; two top quality professionals. The accommodation was excellent, albeit one only for its essential location, as was the food & beverage throughout. And everywhere was so clean; even in remote villages well off the main tourist trails the washroom and other facilities were sparkling. Wrap all this up with Martin’s cheerful enthusiasm for his craft, at which he is a master, and a terrific experience was all but guaranteed … and so it proved! Will I return? For sure I will … unfortunately, I cannot make it in 2018 but have 2019 in my sights!
Very professionally planned, organized and executed!
I was so impressed with the 2014 Hokkaido winter wildlife tour that I also joined the 2015 Hokkaido Winter Landscape tour. Both tours were truly outstanding. On the wildlife tour, the quantity of cranes, eagles, snow monkeys, etc., far exceeded expectations. The weather presented us with some challenges but plans were quickly adjusted to provide an extremely productive and rewarding photo tour. The tour/workshop was very professionally planned, organized and executed.
Similarly, during the Landscape tour, all efforts were made to provide us with interesting locations that would be appropriate for the existing lighting and snow conditions. Such planning and execution would not be possible without Martin’s in depth experience in Japan and particularly in Hokkaido. As MB photography podcast listeners would agree, Martin is extremely knowledgeable on the technical and artistic aspects of photography and he is always eager to educate and provide assistance to all participants, regardless of skill levels. It should also be mentioned that the Japan tour operator support, transportation, lodging, meals, onsen, etc., all contributed to a unique, enjoyable, Hokkaido photographic experience —Highly recommended!
You really inspired me during the trip!
As one of the participants of the 2018 Namibia Tour and after looking over your first blog of that trip this morning I wanted to comment immediately, while the tears are still fresh in my eyes. I guess I would describe them as tears of joy or maybe gratitude. Only being back home from that trip a couple of days and still a little bit jet-lagged it is emotionally a bit overwhelming for me to try and describe my experience right now. The beauty and diversity I experienced in Namibia were both amazing and surprising. As a beginner photographer what I learned about photography far exceeded any of my expectations. As a lover of life what I experienced from everyone on the trip was camaraderie, support and a real passion for beauty, vision, and creativity. I want to say to you Martin, to your assistant Rich, and each one of my fellow co-participants of the Namibia journey of a lifetime – thank you! I recalled the message on the shirt backs of our driver/guides – “We Change Lives”…. How true!
You really inspired me during the trip Martin, and your photos from the travelogue posts continue to inspire me! I can’t keep away from my computer since I’ve returned from Namibia. I love playing around with my photos in Lightroom. I am paying more attention to the details of the composition of my photos instead of just choosing what is most in focus. Studying them in Lightroom and working to develop them is continuing to teach me a lot about how to take a good photo. Anyway, I just wanted to let you know I’m having fun, feeling creative and inspired by what I learned on the trip and the photos that I have to play with now…. I even feel that I came away with a handful of really good photographs that I am proud of. Thank you for all of the help you gave me Martin!
Exceeded my expectations on all levels!
The Snow Monkeys & Hokkaido Tour and Workshop exceeded my expectations on all levels. The wildlife was amazing, the Japanese winter wonderland was beautiful and on top of that we got a glimpse into japanese culture. The whole tour was perfectly organized by Martin and his wonderful crew which relieved us from all the tedious bits and pieces that come along with such a journey. The icing on the cake is Martin’s way to share knowledge and to give lessons on how to photograph in snow and the existing weather conditions. The tour is quite demanding and certainly no vacation but it is worth every effort.
Truly Marvelous
Iceland should be on the wish list for every serious landscape photographer. It’s truly marvelous and unlike anywhere else on the planet. Martin Bailey and his team were terrific, paying great attention to the locations and details. I highly recommend this workshop. And yes, I learned a lot and came home with great images.
I was moved by the Landscape
It was such an amazing trip Martin. I haven’t been moved by landscape as much as I was in Iceland and I don’t mean that lightly.
We improved our ability to capture birds in flight!
We particularly wanted to improve our ability to capture birds in flight during this trip, and we have certainly achieved that. Using back button focusing helped us to improve, as did a clearer understanding of our cameras’ auto focus features. Thank you Martin. Photographing the eagles taking fish from the water was an experience we will never forget, and just one of many highlights.
This tour truly delivers a Hokkaido Winter Wonderland Workshop!
From the moment we all met at Haneda Airport, the trip was ‘flawless”. The organization and execution of the entire trip was meticulous and well thought out, the hotel accommodation plush, and the local cuisine exquisite.
Martin’s eloquent skill in the Japanese language, and having excellent mastery of the local environment meant he was able to deliver the very best of Hokkaido for both wildlife and landscape photo opportunities.
I had always struggled with the intricacy of exposure and I never shot in full manual mode, Martin’s insight on these topics is ingenious, suffice to say, after the trip, I now only ever shoot in full manual mode. Martin’s tutoring meant I came away from the Hokkaido tour with many 1st class photos of Japanese Red-Crowned Cranes, Eagles, Ezo Deer and a sound understanding of photography. This tour truly delivers a Hokkaido Winter Wonderland Workshop
Truly Great Tour Mates
Iceland 2014 was my first ever photography tour and workshop, and it was wonderful! Martin led us to amazing sites and scenes, and also provided expert guidance and feedback along the way, through a critique session and processing sessions. A bonus was the truly great group of friendly tour-mates, who made the trip even better. I highly recommend this tour!
You developed a terrific itinerary!
I want to thank you for a wonderful trip to Japan. You developed a terrific itinerary that included traditional lodging and food, fantastic opportunities to take pictures of snow monkeys, Japanese Red-crowned cranes, Sea Eagles and much more. I would also like to commend you on what I consider your natural ability to teach. I learned so much on this trip.
Extremely Well Planned
This was my first ever photo tour and having met Martin before and seeing how much of a perfectionist he is I knew it would be extremely well planned. Tim is a great guide who knows the country like the back of his hand. Martin is a terrific host who looked after us all and made sure we got the most from each day. Great food, amazing sights, wild weather and loads of fun, this trip had it all. I would highly recommend it to anyone.
Hokkaido is an amazing photography destination!
I joined Martin on his January 2017 Landscape Photography tour to Hokkaido, Japan. What an amazing, extremely well-organized photography tour! Martin’s team of a very experienced coach driver and tour administrator made sure that the holiday went smoothly and hassle-free. The tour administrator; especially went to great lengths to be helpful and to ensure that our energy and enthusiasm was totally directed at our photography. Hokkaido is an amazing photography destination and Martin’s knowledge and expertise of this beautiful part of Japan ensured that we were in the right place at the right time to produce exceptional minimalist images. We had plenty of time to get the images, never rushed and if the weather wasn’t quite right, then we would go back again. If we needed any photography advice, Martin was always on hand.
I just love the trees, they are so beautifully shaped and placed! We had a lovely, friendly group of people from different parts of the world and I enjoyed the camaraderie of discussing our images (and equipment) whilst thawing out on our spacious, warm coach. We also had great fun getting to know Japanese food and acquiring a taste for Sake! If you want to experience a photographic adventure and come home with some exceptional minimalist images, then I would definitely recommend you book a photography holiday with Martin Bailey Photography. It was brilliant, I’m still thinking of all the happy memories now!
Great experience, beautiful locations and excellent logistics!
I am a fine art photographer and I always dreamed about photographing Japanese landscapes in winter. I heard about Martin Bailey and his photography and he is pretty much the only one offering this kind of tours in Hokkaido, so I signed up. It was a great experience, beautiful locations and excellent logistics. I came home with a lot of beautiful images and Martin really put a lot of efforts on placing me at the right place at the right time. I would not hesitate to sign up again or to join other Martin Bailey’s tours.
You move from learning by doing to knowing what you are doing!
I am an Italian amateur photographer living in France. I have been studying Martin’s mentoring material (podcasts, video, and books) for the past few months and I got convinced that Martin’s approach suits my learning attitude and skills. So, to improve my photography skills I have arranged a one-hour consultation session with him. During the session (via Skype) we have analyzed and discussed a dozen photos I have captured in the last few months. We have systematically addressed both technical and aesthetical aspects of each photo. This process was very instructive and Martin gave me several pieces of practical advice on how to improve or re-interpret my pictures.
In some cases, I have even been able to go back to a specific spot and take a second version of the same picture. This is very useful. Of note, the entire consultation has been video recorded, so I can go back to specific points whenever I need. I will regularly repeat this exercise to set more solid foundations for my photographic skills. In particular, Martin’s approach is based on making photographic choices as deliberate as possible. I very much appreciate this attitude as it allows cumulating and organizing existing and future experiences. In short, you move from learning by doing to knowing what you are doing, which I like a lot.
