The name "inuyarai" means roughly translated, "Something to keep dogs away", and it helps to keep dogs from messing in front of the premises, and also to keep the rain of. However, one of the structure's main purpose is actually to keep people from standing under the eaves of the building, to take shelter when it's raining. This might sound unkind, but the other reason the proprietors would not want people doing this, is so that the person [i]taking shelter[/i] cannot eaves-drop (literally) on customers that might be discussing secret matters. This one is a macro shot of the surface of a pillar which was around 25cm in diameter. This was taken while standing on a sheet of ice at a slight gradient, so I was pretty worried that I was going to end up on my butt with a smashed camera in my hand. It also made it impossible to set up a tripod, so I was hand-holding the camera, which I don't usually like to do for macro shots. The light source was provided by top professional Japanese photographer, Hiroshi Yokoyama, one of the two "Sensei" on the 4 day tour. I've not travelled on ferry's in many Asian countries, but I found it very interesting that spaces to crash out on the floor were made available. Very suitable for Japanese people who often prefer to be at floor level than to using conventional (by Western standards) seating. The floor above this one had rows of plastic seating and white plastic garden furniture that could be moved around, so you aren't forced to lay on the floor if you don't want to. I converted this to black and white to enhance the imagery of a group of evacuees, possibly of an earthquake or other disaster. This shows the men on top of the "Dashi" as they start up the hill from the front of the Narita San, a large complex of temples and towers. There is a band of drummers and flutists inside creating the music that the long line of people pulling the Dashi chant to. Often in Japan people chant "Wasshoi" as they pull or carry these kind of things along. One thing at the Narita Gion Matsuri that I'd not seen before was every so often, the tune changed to a catchy, kind of syncopated rhythm and all the people pulling chimed in with a very up-beat song and ran in and out as opposed to just forward, kicking their legs and flailing their arms around and basically enjoying themselves. It's usually at this time that the crowd gets most excited too, and is followed by cheers and a round of applause. On the last train I boarded on my journey which took about two hours from my apartment, was this young lady in a Yukata, also going to the Matsuri. Most people visiting Japan (myself included for the last twelve years) only think of Narita as the place with the international airport. Never thinking to stop-off and take a look around. My trip there yesterday showed me another side of Narita that was pleasantly surprising. It's a small City but has a lot of history. The first mentions of the Gion Matsuri itself date back to the sixth year of the Kyohou Era, or 1721.
