Sugatami Pond
The word Sugatami literally means to look at (something's) form or shape, as in this case, looking at the shape of Mount Asahi with it's steaming fumaroles reflected in the surface of the pond.

Stunning! Love the reflection of the sun through the clouds in the water. Thermal activity aplenty here it looks like.
"Sugatami Lake (pond) is 1,650 meters above sea level and is at the foot of Mt. Asahi-dake at 2,290 meters"
I have been reading up on Hokkaido since your trip. I now see more of your attraction to this island.

Hee hee, it's great to hear you're reading up on my favourite place in the world Landon! I've changed the title too. This should be a pond not a lake. Well spotted! This image was actually quite heavily worked in PS for me. First, the water and mountains are one and two thirds of a stop brighter than the sky to balance them out. I've used a mask to put them together again. Next, I've applied a tone curve to bring out the mid-tones in the mountain and the shadows a bit more. Finally, a touch of saturation to bring out the colour of the mountain and that patch of blue sky just a little more.

Perfect application of PS if you ask me.

Thanks Landon. I'm definitely OK with this amount of retouching now. It was actually quite fun!

My eyes grew wide when this appeared in iTunes. This is really spectacular. Very beautiful use of wide angle. During the podcast, I had at first thought you said there were "hordes of midgets" here, making my eyes grow wide again.

Hordes of midgets!!! Yes, I guess it's pretty close. I get close to the edge sometimes, you know, foot in mouth syndrome, but I try to remain politically correct. Thanks for the kind words about the shot Forrest! This is one of my favourites right now. I'm pleased I'm over my old resistance to Photoshop to some degree. A couple of years ago this scene would have never made it through my initial scan to find the 'uploaders'.
